Ring Video Doorbell

The robin, bright breasted and oblivious, perched on the Ring Doorbell for a solid two minutes this morning. It was studying its own shimmering reflection, I suspect, and completely missed the chance to be a case study in motion detection. Not the most auspicious start to my evaluation.
Let’s cut through the fluff, shall we? This isn’t just a doorbell; it’s a smart home security node, a mini-surveillance system that aims to deliver peace of mind. And frankly, it largely succeeds, especially at the $200 price point. The 1080p HD video is crisp, offering a significantly better image than the first-generation Ring doorbells, which looked… well, muddy, to put it kindly. The two-way talk function is crystal clear, thanks to the noise cancellation technology. I could easily converse with the delivery guy, even with the sound of my air conditioner humming in the background.
The wired installation is a boon for consistent power. Forget fiddling with batteries – a crucial advantage over competing wireless models, which often suffer from unpredictable downtime. Speaking of power, though, the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity is a standard you’ll find across the board. While it’s reliable, its range can be an issue in larger homes. If your router is tucked away in a far corner, expect occasional lag or dropouts. The fix? A Wi-Fi extender. Cheap, easy, and a worthwhile investment.
Motion detection is where this thing truly shines. The adjustable zones are a godsend. You can pinpoint the areas to monitor, eliminating the nuisance of constant notifications from passing cars or leaves blowing across the lawn. This is far better than some cheaper options, which blast alerts constantly, driving you up the wall. Customizing privacy settings is a breeze, too. You have full control over recording times and who has access to the footage. It’s user-friendly, bordering on intuitive.
My only real gripe? The lack of local storage. You’re locked into a subscription for cloud storage to review footage, something that privacy-conscious individuals, like myself, might bristle at. However, given the price point and the breadth of features, it’s a compromise I can live with. It makes the system function and remain cost-effective.
So, who is this doorbell for? If you’re a homeowner looking for an easy-to-install, reliable security upgrade with a solid feature set, go ahead and hit that “add to cart” button. Just remember to factor in the cost of a Wi-Fi extender if you’re dealing with a large home, and prepare for a robin or two to check out the new addition.
